Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty, liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self-image.

Despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, some people may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. These areas may be due to family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness.

You are a good candidate for Liposuction if you have localized fat deposits in:
Hips and buttocks
Abdomen and waist
Upper arms
Inner knee
Chest area
Cheeks, chin and neck
Calves and ankles

In some cases, liposuction is performed alone, in other cases it can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift, breast reduction or a tummy tuck.

Preoperative Workup: Arrange for consultation with the Doctor

Preoperative Evaluation: This includes your Blood tests and relevant Investigations including Photography

Preoperative instructions:

Anaesthesia: General / Local anaesthesia with sedation

The incision

Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. First, sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

Currently, liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure. In fact, hundreds of thousands of people are opting for this surgery each year, but now many are looking for safer, less painful alternatives to traditional liposuction. VASER Lipo, or LipoSelection®, is an advanced body contouring procedure that uses ultrasonic technology to selectively remove unwanted body fat while preserving other important tissues like blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.

In a recent survey, VASER Lipo following procedure benefits are reported:
Smooth contours in all body areas
Improved skin retraction
Minimal patient pain and bruising
Fast patient recovery Problem areas that can be addressed with liposuction

An alternative to the harsh techniques of traditional liposuction, VASER Lipo uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology designed to gently reshape your body. Ultrasound is actually sound energy that travels in waves. What makes this approach unique is that these waves can be targeted specifically to fatty tissue. The high-energy waves cause the VASER probe to vibrate and liquefy the fatty tissue on contact. A specially- designed suction device or massage is then used to gently remove the liquefied fat, while preserving the surrounding connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. Why is it important to leave these other tissues in place? If blood vessels and nerves aren't damaged, you experience minimal bruising and pain. Preserving connected tissues enhances healing and promotes good skin retraction. With its minimally-invasive approach, VASER Lipo provides smooth, predictable results and fast patient recovery.

Duration of Surgery: 1-3 hrs depending upon the volume of fat removed.

Hospital Stay: Day Care.

Recovery and Results: Your improved body contour will be apparent when the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside. With continued practices of healthy diet and fitness, the loss of excess fatty tissue should be permanently maintained. However, substantial weight gain can alter an otherwise permanent result.

Once your procedure is completed, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover treatment areas. These help to control swelling and compress the skin to your new body contours.

In addition, small temporary drains may be placed in existing incisions beneath the skin to remove any excess blood or fluid.

A special note: Secondary procedures may sometimes be recommended to reduce excess skin.

Are there different types of Liposuction?
Some offices use different names which mean the same thing. You may hear words such as "lipoplasty" "liposuction" or "suction lipectomy" -- they all mean the same thing. Besides Traditional Liposuction, other types are Vaser using ultrasonic energy and power assisted liposuction using vibrations.

Can liposuction be used as a weight loss method?
No, liposuction is used to get rid of isolated areas of fat which are diet and/or exercise resistant. Weight loss is achieved as the fat removed does have mass.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are people at their normal weight who have isolated areas of fat. Firm, elastic skin allows for a better outcome.

Is there any age limit?
The patient's age is not a factor. However, older patients have less skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as younger patients.

How long do I need to be off of work?
It is suggested that you take off of work for 3-5 days after surgery but continue to avoid strenuous activity for one month after surgery.

When can I get back to my normal routine?
Each patient differs with recovery times. Also, the recovery time will vary depending on how much liposuction was performed. Most patients are able to return to work 2-7 days after surgery depending on the areas treated.

When can I start exercising?
The doctor will assess each patient and discuss returning to their exercise regimen. We highly recommend walking within the first couple of days - this helps with the swelling, constipation, etc. Depending on the areas treated, most patients are able to resume exercise 2-4 weeks after the procedure.

Anything I can do to decrease the swelling?
Most of our patients find that walking helps decrease the swelling after liposuction surgery.

Will the fat return to the area that was treated?
If after liposuction surgery one does not eat healthy and exercise regularly, the fat cells that remain in the treated area can swell. The fat cells that have been removed are gone forever. Liposuction is not meant to be used as a weight loss program.

Can I do multiple areas at the same time?
Yes. The doctor will discuss what procedures may be performed at the same time while still being safe. Many patients will opt to have liposuction and breast augmentation surgery OR liposuction and tummy tuck surgery at the same time. Combination surgeries can give dramatic results.

Will I be wearing any special garments after the surgery?
Yes. When you wake up after the procedure, a garment will be on the treated areas. This compressive garment is there to assist in the healing process and to decrease the amount of swelling. The doctor will discuss the amount of time you will need to wear the garment - depending on what areas are treated.
